Rufino Tamayo was a Mexican painter during
the mid-20th century. Tamayo opposed the Mexican revolution and favored what he
considered traditional Mexico. Tamayo eventually moved to New York due to this
controversy.
This painting is called "Perro de la luna."
I like this painting because it is very simplistic while also mysterious. I think the choice of the coloring and the design depicts a sense of disturbance and unrest, because Tamayo wanted the painting to refer to the Mexican Revolution. One of the more intriguing things about this piece is what it symbolizes. The scene illustrates danger or destruction. The painting as a whole could symbolize the traditional Mexican society and the threat of the revolution posed to its endurance. The dog itself could symbolize the destruction of traditional Mexico.
The barking dog (wolf, coyote, etc.) are always symbols of encroaching danger. Its message is one of alarm, to be aware that danger is nigh. Yes, you're correct. In this painting, Tamayo definitely is sounding an alarm.
